What Does a Wedding Celebrant Do?

When couples think about their wedding celebrant, they often picture the 20-30 minutes when the ceremony takes place—a magical moment filled with love, laughter, and maybe a few happy tears. While this is undeniably a key part of my role as a celebrant, there’s so much more to what I do!

Let me take you behind the scenes to show you how I help make your wedding day truly unforgettable.

Behind the scenes of what a celebrant actually does.

Crafting Your Ceremony

My ceremonies focus on you two. They're lighthearted, filled with laughter, and celebrate your unique love story. It’s not the Robyn Paterson Comedy Show—I promise! 😊 Instead, I work with you to create a ceremony that reflects your personalities, your relationship, and the vibe you want for your big day.

This means getting to know you, helping you choose readings or rituals (if you want them), and ensuring that everything feels just right.

Handling the Legalities

Without a Commonwealth Government Authorised Celebrant, you simply cannot be legally married in Australia. My role includes:

  • Completing the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) and ensuring it’s lodged correctly.

  • Preparing all legal documents for signing on the day.

  • Lodging your marriage with Births, Deaths, and Marriages (BDM) after your ceremony.

Sometimes, the legalities are straightforward. Other times, they can be a bit more complex. Either way, I’m here to ensure everything is handled smoothly. And if there’s a challenge? Bring it on—I love finding solutions for tricky situations!

On the Day

On your wedding day, I’m much more than the person standing up front with a microphone.

  • I arrive 45 minutes before the ceremony to ensure everything runs seamlessly.

  • I coordinate with your photographer, musicians, and anyone else involved to ensure everyone knows the plan.

  • After the ceremony, I’m usually around to assist until after the group photo or until I’m no longer needed.

Your wedding is my priority, and I’m here to make it as stress-free as possible.

Post-Ceremony Duties

Even after the confetti has been thrown and the champagne is flowing, my work isn’t done!As soon as I get home, I process your paperwork and lodge it with BDM—often before your reception has even wrapped up! I’ll email you to confirm when your marriage is officially registered.

This quick turnaround means you can usually apply for your official BDM marriage certificate within a week or two. I’ll guide you on how to do this too!
